Why see a Holistic Counsellor / Holistic Therapist

A holistic counsellor, or holistic therapist, treats a person as a unified whole (mind, body and spirit) and includes looking at a person’s history, trauma, values, beliefs and lifestyle.

While psychology is useful for understanding the mental processes taking place, it often gets stuck at the surface level of cognitive understanding. Working with a holistic therapist goes into the unconscious – connecting with the feelings and energy that are stuck in the body, of which the client may be completely unaware. By using guided awareness, one can become conscious of heavy/dense energy and emotions so they can be felt, expressed, and let go of. Guided awareness can also be used to connect with the positive energy and aspects that we all have an innate access, and these states can be anchored into the body – i.e. it can become embodied.

Psychotherapy may work with body sensations, parts work (inner child work), imagination and visualisation, movement, role play and even art therapy. At first this may seem strange and childish, but this state of playful curiosity, along with compassion for the self, is one of the key things we need access to in order to heal. We can convince ourselves of anything using our thoughts, but the body never lies – it always gives us accurate information, even if these feelings are triggers from past trauma.

A holistic therapist in particular can help with understanding spiritual emergence and psychic phenomena. Psychologists often diagnose and pathologise these phenomena as psychosis, schizophrenia, delusions and disassociation, but what it actually means is that you are wide open to your own unconscious and/or external forces or spirits. Learning to explore and work with these will help reintegrate these parts of yourself, and move forwards as a whole and healthy human being with access to your gifts.

If you are seeking support that honours your complexity, your sensitivity, and your inner wisdom, working with a holistic counsellor or holistic therapist can be an important step, especially if you are feeling stuck or misunderstood. It is an invitation to come back into relationship with yourself — slowly, compassionately, and mindfully.
